Chevening is the UK Government international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders. Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations, Chevening offers two types of award – Chevening Scholarships and Chevening Fellowships – the recipients of which are personally selected by British embassies and high commissions throughout the world.
Chevening offers a unique opportunity for future leaders and influencers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK.
The Chevening Scholarships Programme commenced in 1983 as the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Awards Scheme (FCOAS). In 1994, the name of the scheme was changed to Chevening, after Chevening House in Sevenoaks, Kent – currently the joint official residence of the British Foreign Secretary and the British Deputy Prime Minister.
Chevening alumni are numbering around 48,000 worldwide. The organized activities of Chevening alumni have a long history in each country. Some are within formally registered associations, others are informal groups, but all share common values such as the desire to establish community with shared ideas and views of their countries’ prosperity, to develop ties between their countries and the United Kingdom and to establish new friendships. Being a part of the Chevening Community is associated with leadership, prestige and commitment.
Association of Bulgarian Chevening Alumni was registered in 2006 and re-registered as Bulgarian Chevening Association in 2017. The main objective is to preserve and develop the network of Bulgarian Chevening alumni and to cooperate with other similar organizations. In the spirit of Chevening, the Association will rely on the active support of its members to organize public debates, forums, meetings and seminars on socially significant topics and issues, to participate in implementation of projects of social significance as well as to support building the civil society and the development of a knowledge and innovation based economy. The British Embassy and the British Council in Sofia have supported the relaunch of the Association.
